
No one in the village of Corvin, let alone in the continent of Dal-Rhiatah, knows precisely where Coven is or even of its existence, but it is sometimes briefly alluded to in ancient texts and oral storytelling in more rural parts of that country.
Located somewhere in the misty, Ghost-ridden Barren Plains, Coven is a shanty town built from loose stones, bits of wood, tents, garbage, and salvaged building materials. The youngest inhabitant is eleven years old, and the eldest inhabitant is Noran, who is bizarrely the only adult and the one who is in charge most of the time.
But who are the people of Coven? And what are they doing here, surviving in the wilderness where any hungry Ghost or Witch could happen upon them and feast on their souls, leaving them charred or disintegrated husks?
The people of Coven are ghostbait children, exiled and unwanted for being able to Bring Ghosts to them whenever they are ill or under stress, or feeling strong emotions. This is because Ghosts in general are bad news.
Coven is protected by a haphazard fence tipped with pieces of a substance known as Wizard’s Glass, which is the only material that repels Ghosts and Witches. Unfortunately, there are precious few bits of this glass left, and the wizard who designed it took the recipe for it with him into death.
Little do the children know that although Noran is training them in basic magic and combat skills, he is not their true leader and he does not have their best interests at heart at all. He answers to the terrifying Lady of a Thousand Faces…
