This introverted and thoughtful young lad is the younger brother of Elka Wyverg, a girl who suffers from the ability to summon different kinds of Ghosts whenever she feels strong emotions. Elka is a ghostbait child, confirmed by the Test all children in Dal-Rhiatah have to undertake in their eleventh year.
We will meet Toby and Elka in the second book of the Nighthunter series, “The Curse of the Grim” (working title). We enter the story after his sister has taken her Test, but before he has to take his own. Elka accidentally summons (or “Brings”) a Ghost which causes disaster for the Wyverg family, and The Nighthunter steps in to rescue the two children.
But after that, the Nighthunter has a quandary: where to take the siblings so that they will be safe? The orphanage is not a good place for children, as the Nighthunter knows from past experiences — but seeing as Toby’s sister is ghostbait, no household in Corvin will want to take her in.
Eventually both children are left in the care of Byrna, an old friend of the Nighthunter and aunt to Noran Cadwallader. She appears to be trustworthy, but faced with the terror of annihilation by a Ghost possibly summoned by Elka, how much can she be trusted?
Toby not only has to face his Test, bullying, and intimidating teachers at his new school, but a dangerous and supernatural quest for his missing sister (as Byrna was not to be trusted after all) in the company of his childhood hero, The Nighthunter, and his bully, who gradually turns into a friend.
But the main object of their journey is to find and destroy the source of the curse affecting all the kids born in Dal-Rhiatah, the curse that gave rise to the existence of Ghosts in the first instance — the curse of the Grim…
