Cover Story

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what went into the cover design of A Dark Heritage: The Nighthunter.

One of my hobbies is making digital collages from photographs (either my own or from websites such as pixabay.com and pexels.com, where photos are free to use and not copyrighted). I started doing this when producing illustrations for one of the early issues of OUAC (Once Upon A Crocodile) e-zine.

The original collage I created for A Dark Heritage’s cover looked like this:

In the end, both myself and the publisher decided to omit the red symbol in the foreground, as it was somewhat impeding on the rest of the image.

(The symbol is that of the “new god” The Nighthunter discovers most of the people of Cybrith Port, Ossyan, have begun worshipping, fact fans).

The image depicts the legendary sword Athannor under the waters of the White Ocean. Athannor is Logan Bartholom (The Nighthunter)’s sword. He uses it to banish and dissipate Ghosts and Witches, and is made out of a special type of metal. Logan’s companions, The Vorx and Noran Cadwallader, cannot touch it without pain or risk to their lives, for various demonic / necromantic reasons).

We also omitted “Book 1” from the lower right corner, as that would have been confusing to readers (seeing as, so far, this novel is a standalone book).

The final version of the cover:

And that’s the story of the cover. To read the story underneath the cover, visit Amazon and buy the ebook! There are buttons leading to it from the Nightwalks’ website home page (www.nightwalks.co.uk), but I’ll also put them here:
