Wonda is a somewhat vague, nebulous, and free spirit* with a subtle current of mystery and hidden wisdom about what lies behind the veneer of reality.
(*When this author says “spirit” he means personality — Wonda is a human, not a Ghost.)
This young woman lives in a secluded tower on a piece of land known as Wizard’s Lot — which is magically concealed from most of the rest of the world — with her father, Skati of the Skins.
She didn’t always live with her father. Before she turned twenty-one, Wonda lived in the outside world, with her mother in the mountains of Dal-Rhiatah, ageing at the same rate as the rest of humanity.
When she turned twenty-one, Wonda left her life of manual labour on her mother’s family’s farm to search for her estranged father and find out about magic — where it came from, whether she might be able to learn how to use it, and why some people had the ability to use it but others didn’t.
She ran away in the company of a cave-troll that had been a member of a ring of standing stones close to her family home, the pair of them enduring and conquering many trials and obstacles, ultimately parting ways.
Not long after this, she discovered Wizard’s Lot and began to study magic and natural philosophy under the tutelage of Skati, not realising he was her father. She learned how to fly and surf on clouds.
After finding out how she and Skati were related and why he had abandoned her mother, Wonda eventually forgave him and decided to stay to help him guard the tower from those who would use its powers for nefarious purposes (such as The Lady of a Thousand Faces.)
Ever since arriving in Wizard’s Lot, Wonda has not aged and is immortal, like Skati.
Much of her backstory does not feature in the second book of the Nighthunter series, (working title: The Curse of the Grim), though she is present in it. I plan to write her her own book, one of these days.
