Who and What is Arnie?

In Book Two of The Nighthunter series, Arnie (or Arnauld Wornovik) is a bereft twin and socially awkward young teenager who prefers the company of Ghosts to living humans — or at least, he thinks he does.

His penchant for hanging out in graveyards and trying to break into buildings that were previously Haunted, amongst other differences (he is the child of immigrants from Dynar, he’s introverted and clever) means that he’s bullied or treated with contempt by the students of Mundwen’s School for Boys in Corvin, Dal-Rhiatah, and he prefers talking to adults.

It would appear that he has to lead a solitary life, unable to reunite with his twin brother Andrew. However, this changes when the Wyverg children, Toby and Elka, lose their parents in tragic circumstances. Arnie’s morbid interest in the Ghost that killed them and in the strange character of the Nighthunter leads to him becoming “friends” with Toby.

At first, Arnie cynically uses Toby to try to get closer to the Nighthunter — looking for a way to find his long-lost twin — and he doesn’t treat the younger boy with much kindness, but after having some perilous adventures with Toby and Logan, the two boys become genuine buddies.

Arnie and his brother Andrew were separated after undergoing the ordeal known as the Test, the results of which showed that Andrew was a ghostbait child and Arnie was a witchward child. Seeing as ghostbait children in Dal-Rhiatah are dangerous, Andrew was taken from his family and sent into exile. He is likely to be dead, but that doesn’t stop Arnie from hoping.
